In January 1945, the Red Army was approaching Auschwitz. The SS forced the prisoners to march westward in heavily guarded columns. In icy cold, in snow, poorly dressed, and usually without food, the prisoners marched down the roads. The exertions and the cold caused many prisoners to collapse from exhaustion, and then they were shot by the SS. Thousands lost their lives in this way.
